Outside Burgoyne’s tent, a quick glance at his pocket watch showed Kep he had less than 30 minutes before he was due to meet Mary and warn her brother he was a spy suspect. The last thing he wanted was to draw attention, so he pulled his cap low, shouldered his haversack, and strolled in the direction of the baroness’s house.

Tasks were piling up and jumbling in his head.

Here’s what he had to do.

Get Burgoyne’s letter from that messenger and get it to the Americans.

Warn Mary that her brother Finn was suspected of spying and they needed to leave camp ASAP.

Steal the baroness’s journal and get it to the Americans.

Warn the Banneker family that Captain Parr was planning a “midnight visit.”
